South African icon and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela is undergoing surgery for a hernia.

According to CNN 93-year old Mandela was rushed to a hospital today on what South Africa's President claimed were "abdominal pains". A member of Mandela's family told reporters that the hospital rush was in fact due to a hernia.
The name of the hospital Mandela is receiving surgery at has not been released to the public.
As reported by CNN:
The 93-year-old likely will be discharged within the next two days, said the relative.
Earlier, President Jacob Zuma said Mandela was being treated for a "longstanding abdominal complaint."
"We wish him a speedy recovery and assure him of the love and good wishes of all South Africans and people throughout the world," Zuma said in a statement.
A government official assured the public that Mandela's hospital stay was not an emergency.
"People need not panic. This was planned ... Mandela has had abdominal pains for sometime," said Keith Khoza, a spokesman for the ruling African National Congress.
Officials and family declined to name the hospital the former president is undergoing treatment.

**UPDATE**According to an update by CNN, Mandela's surgery is not life threatening and the surgery was pre-planned. Former South Africa President Nelson Mandela has undergone a "diagnostic procedure" in hospital, but his life is not in danger, officials say.
