Richard Land, the President of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, is apologizing today after he called President Obama, Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson “shameful” for their ongoing support of Trayvon Martin.

STORY: Really?!?! Southern Baptist Leader Calls Obama “Shameful” For Supporting Trayvon Martin

Land faced heavy criticism for what he said on his March 31 radio show, claiming President Obama and other African-American leaders were keeping the Trayvon Martin shooting story alive for political gain.

The Associated Baptist Press posted a letter Land wrote, which stated:

“I am writing to express my deep regret for any hurt or misunderstanding my comments about the Trayvon Martin case have generated.

It grieves me to hear that any comments of mine have to any degree set back the cause of racial reconciliation in Southern Baptist or American life.”

An acknowledgement and apology is the step in the right direction, but we must continue to fight for justice in the name of Trayvon.
