South Africa was just turned upside down! Olympic superstar, Oscar Pistorius aka "The Blade Runner" has been arrested for murder of his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, who was shot inside his South African home.
The Associated Press reports,
Oscar Pistorius has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend after model Reeva Steenkamp was shot inside the Olympic athlete's home in South Africa.
Lt. Col. Katlego Mogale told The Associated Press that police received a call that there had been a shooting at Pistorius' home. Mogale said when police arrived, they found paramedics trying to revive the woman, who had been shot an unspecified number of times.
South African media outlets are reporting that Pistorius might have mistaken Steenkamp for a burglar and shot her, however, police did not clarify that statement.
Apparently, Pistorius kept a cricket bat and one baseball bat behind the door, a revolver by his bed and a machine gun by the window to protect himself against the often hostile and violent crimes that occur in the area.
Police said a 26-year-old male would appear in court later on Thursday. Authorities in South Africa do not name suspects in crimes until they have appeared in court but police spokesperson Brigadier Denise Beukes said that Pistorius was at his home after the death of Steenkamp and "there is no other suspect involved."
Just yesterday, Steenkamp took to her Twitter page to talk about how excited she was for Valentines Day.
Police aren't sure of Pistorius' motive in the murder.
Beukes said the suspect was undergoing blood alcohol and forensic tests and had made a request to be brought to court immediately. Beukes said he would apply for bail, but the South African Police Service would oppose the application.
