Last week, Representative Todd Akin said his Democratic opponent in the race for the Missouri Senate seat, Claire McCaskill, was less “ladylike,” and in August, he infamously claimed that victims of “legitimate rape” hardly get pregnant because “the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

But as mystifying as it may be, Akin has managed to top his list of outlandish sexist remarks with an even more outrageous claim.

While giving a speech in 2008, Akin made the assertion that doctors that perform abortions are “terrorists.” He compared abortions to slavery and (get ready for the wowzer), he claimed that doctors “give abortions to women who aren’t actually pregnant.”

According to Akin, it’s a “common practice” that is hurting America. Here’s what Akin said as he addressed the House floor:

“Abortionists” are “terrorists:”

“It is no big surprise that we fight the terrorists because they are fundamentally un-American, and yet we have terrorists in our own culture called abortionists. One of the good pieces of news why we are winning this war is because there are not enough heartless doctors being graduated from medical schools. There is a real shortage of abortionists. Who wants to be at the very bottom of the food chain of medical profession? And what sort of places do these bottom-of-the-food-chain doctors work in? Places that are really a pit.

Doctors give abortions to women “who are not actually pregnant:”

“You find that along with the culture of death go all kinds of other law-breaking: not following good sanitary procedure, giving abortions to women who are not actually pregnant, cheating on taxes, all these kinds of things, misuse of anesthetics so that people die or almost die. All of these things are common practice, but all of that information is available for America.”

And, finally, he compared abortion to “slavery:”

“There will be a day – just as there is today, where people say, ‘Who would ever support slavery? In the future, there will be a day when men will say, ‘Who would have ever supported something so un-American as abortion?”

We’re stunned for three reasons: one, by his distorted view of the world, two, because he is still in the race for Senate and actually has a one percent lead over his opponent, and three, mainstream Republicans like Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum continue to stand behind this sick man.

What is going on?!
