A dark colored BMW and a light or gray sedan drove past Tyler House, an eight-story, subsidized residential building near New York Avenue, and opened fire on a crowd of people at about 2:10 a.m. Monday.

The victims, the youngest being a 17-year-old, were mostly struck in the arms and legs.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier and Assistant Police Chief Peter Newsham said the seriously injured victim was hit in the back. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

Surveillance cameras show the shooting take place as the cars ride past the building. Shots are fired and the crowd of people standing outside scatter and fall to the ground.

Police are investigating motives and interviewing witnesses. They were trying to figure out whether some or all of the victims may have come from a large nightclub located less than a block away, and whether events at the nightclub from earlier in the evening may have been a factor in the shootings. The club closed shortly before the shooting.

While we are glad that there were no fatalities from this shooting, we are saddened by the violent nature of the crime. The police department is offering a reward of $10,000 for information that may lead to an arrest.
