Yazeed Mohammed Abunayyan did something really stupid on a Continental Airlines flight from Portland to Houston.

The Saudi teen was held down and detained by fellow passengers after he began shouting ‘Allah is great’ and making references to Osama bin Laden as he swung his fists at a flight attendant who told him he couldn’t smoke an electronic cigarette aboard the plane.

Just minutes after takeoff, Abunayyan ignored the ‘No Smoking’ sign and began to cause trouble, the pilot then had to turn the plane around and land back at Portland International Airport only after 20 minutes in the air.

When he boarded the plane in Portland, Abunayyan was free on $65,000 bail after being arrested Sunday night in a town 285 miles to the south following a ‘Grand Theft Auto’-style police chase, during which he allegedly rammed two squad cars and tried to run down a pedestrian all while grinning wildly.

According KHOU News, witnesses on the plane said when the flight attendant asked Abunayyan to turn off his cigarette, passengers say he started screaming, punching at the woman and singing or muttering about dead al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Nancy Haywood, a passenger on the plane said, “He was screaming: “Allah is great, Allah is great.” It kind of worries you when that happens.”

Passengers said the man was unruly from the beginning of the journey after he was not given a seat next to his friend on Flight 1113.

After the plane took off the man allegedly lit up – but when he refused to turn off his device, passengers jumped up to help the flight attendant.

“Every guy that was in my area was ready to go,” passenger Mark Foster told KHOU. “It was not even a thought. You can tell buckles were off.”

Passengers held Abunayyan down while the attendant grabbed plastic handcuffs and ankle-cuffs to keep him subdued until the plane landed.

Abunayyan and his friend were arrested and taken off the plane by police at Portland airport before it took off again at 2:05pm.

The Transportation Security Administration said it was not a security issue. An FBI spokesman said the man will face charges.

The use of electronic simulated smoking materials on flights are prohibited on Continental Airlines according their policy.
