This past week Donald Trump sat down with Bill O’Reilly on "The O’Reilly Factor" to talk about Trumps' plans to run for el presidente, as well as continue the debate on Obama’s yet-to-be-seen birth certificate. “Maybe he’s hiding something,” Trump said at one point during the show. “Maybe he’s Muslim.”
That last line is what I’d like to take issue with in this piece. I’m by no means trying to single out Trump, because if we’re going to be honest here, we’ve all been allowing the anti-Muslim sentiments to brew --liberals and conservatives alike. I remember when Democrats first began hearing accusations that Obama was Muslim. The most popular response was, “He’s not Muslim, he’s Christian!” Sure, that’s true, but aren’t we missing the point here?
I still think to this day the response should have been, “I don’t see a problem.” But in this day and age being “Muslim” is an offense, just like being a murderer, pedophile, or thief.
So I’ll just come right out and spill my guts on the table: xenophobia and U.S. patriotism are mutually exclusive.
