After nearly 50 years, Barbie is losing it – all of it.

Our favorite childhood toy is taking a page out of Britney Spears’ page. No, she isn’t planning on wielding umbrellas, but she is going bald.

The doll long known for her impractical body proportions and lavishly pink lifestyle is giving back thanks to a little social networking tool called Facebook.

A campaign on Facebook was started to urge the toy making company Mattel to create a hairless version of the doll for children dealing with cancer and alopecia, and the result is a bald friend of Barbie.

According to Pop2it:

Rebecca Sypin and Jane Bingham started the Facebook page, “Beautiful and Bald Barbie! Let’s see if we can get it made,” in December, and as of Friday (March 30) the page had more than 153,000 likes. Bingham and her daughter both lost their hair while battling cancer.

Mattel announced on its own Facebook page Friday that it would be producing a “friend of Barbie, which will include wigs, hats, scarves and other fashion accessories.” However, the dolls won’t be for sale in retail stores.
“We will work with our longstanding partner, the Children’s Hospital Association, to donate and distribute the dolls exclusively to children’s hospitals directly reaching girls who are most affected by hair loss,” Mattel’s message states. “A limited number of dolls and monetary donations will also be made to CureSearch for Children’s Cancer and the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.”

It’s great to see that Barbie is hopping out of her pink convertible and taking a stand for a cause!
