Fei Fei Sun Breaks Barriers As First Chinese Model On The Cover Of Vogue Italia (PHOTOS)

Posted January 3, 2013 by Jason Brooks for Global Grind Staff

With the Chinese New Year right around the corner, it's good to see yet another barrier being broken for people of Chinese descent.

This month, Vogue Italia featured Chinese model Fei Fei Sun on the cover of their magazine. This may not seem like much, however Fei Fei Sun is the very first Chinese model to be featured on the Italian fashion magazine's cover.

Shot by famed fashion photographer Steven Meisel, Fei Fei Sun pays homage to ’50s supermodel China Machado under the cover line ‘Global Life.’ In a statement about the barrier-shattering cover and issue, Vogue Italia says:

“Fusion elegance. The language of style is universal: border-free. Thus, by evoking the exotic and sophisticated allure of China Machado, the fusion icon of the Fifties, a story of elegance and refinement is recounted.”

While the ideals of beauty are still heavily steered towards white women and covers with models of color are few and far between, it is inspiring to see Vogue Italia take a chance on an exotic model like Fei Fei Sun, especially during a time when magazine sales on a whole are much lower than they were just a decade ago.

Take a look at Fei Fei Sun's entire spread in the January 2013 issue of Vogue Italia in the gallery above.
