Karl Lagerfeld makes a move no less bold than we would expect of him, but this time, the reckless abandonment is happening on the catwalk.

In light of French president, Francois Hollande’s, controversial intention of introducing a same-sex marriage bill this Friday, the fashion heavyweight and longtime Chanel couturier is using his influential position to take a stance in support of the legalization of gay marriage.

During his recent Paris Grand Palais fashion show, Lagerfeld sent two models in matching couture bridal gowns down the runway for Chanel’s Spring Summer 2013 Haute Couture fashion collection. The lesbian brides were holding hands, while being accompanied by one of Lagerfeld’s own young nephews. When asked whether the implication was intentional, his reply was, “Of course it was.”

The German-born designer tells AP he doesn’t even understand what all the debate is about. He points out that, “Since 1904 (in France) the church and the state have been separate,” therefore people who consider marriage a sacred union can continue practicing their tradition in the privacy of their own religious communities.

Lagerfeld believes all religious groups should tolerate gay marriage, however on the topic of gay couples fathering children through artificial insemination, he is not so keen.
