One of the world's greatest mysteries has finally been solved!
Simpsons creator Matt Groening revealed to the public where the iconic cartoon family's hometown of Springfield is located.
After several hints, and conflicting clues, we found out that the town of Springfield is actually in Oregon!
In an interview with Smithsonian magazine, Groening recounted that he had named the town after the TV show Father Knows Best, which took place in a town called Springfield. Groening figured it was the Springfield that was near his own hometown of Portland, Oregon.
Groening told the magazine, “When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, ‘This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.’ And they do.”
Officials in Oregon have known since 2007, when Groening signed a painting to them: "Yo to Springfield, Oregon--The Real Springfield! - Your Pal, Matt Groening. Proud Oregonian 2007!"
They did a good job keeping a secret up until now.
Congratulations Oregon, one of the most iconic fictional cities of all time is located in your state!
