As part of 90th anniversary initiative, I had the honor and privilege to attended the New York Urban League’s event, STRONGER: Girls’ Empowerment Day. The main goal of the day-long affair was to create an opportunity for young women to interact with role models and gain inspiration to succeed in their own lives. It focused on obstacles or other life events that women have to overcome.

This event, which was held at the Time Warner Center in New York City’s Columbus Circle, was hosted by singer, community activist, and GG favorite Mary J. Blige, and featured a panel of New York’s most powerful and influential women like Essence EIC Angela Burt-Murray, O Magazine Editor at Large Gayle King, and Carol’s Daughter owner Lisa Price.

NYUL leads young women to reach for success. Some of the most high-powered women in New York took time to share their experience with young women, giving them an opportunity to gain inspiration from their experiences from their own lives.  The event embodied the mission of the New York Urban League: to empower young people to shape and control their futures.

As a recent high school graduate from a New York City public school, I know first hand the pressure and influence young girls face everyday. It was amazing to see strong, powerful, influental women, who came from less then ideal backgrounds share their success stories and guide the next wave of young women entering into the real world a headway, both good and bad, on what is to come next.
