Military officials say a Marines based in North Carolina, from Ashtabula, have been killed in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense announced Monday that 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Kevin M. Cornelius of Ashtabula died Saturday during combat in Helmand province.

‘This is just unbelievable,’ Bob Fortune, Cornelius’ stepbrother, was quoted as saying in the Star Beacon on Monday.

‘We are so sad but so proud at the same time. I just wish he were here so I could show him how much I respect him. There isn’t enough I can say about him and his sacrifice.’

Cornelius is a graduate of Lakeside High School. He and Gammone were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune.
