Numbers Game

Number: $6 Billion

Where: Iraq

What Happened: Where’s the loot? Pentagon officials determined that one giant C-130 Hercules cargo plane could carry $2.4 billion in shrink-wrapped bricks of $100 bills. They sent an initial full planeload of cash, followed by 20 other flights to Iraq by May 2004 in a $12-billion haul that U.S. officials believe to be the biggest international cash airlift of all time.

This month, the Pentagon and the Iraqi government are finally closing the books on the program that handled all those Benjamins. But despite years of audits and investigations, U.S. Defense officials still cannot say what happened to $6.6 billion in cash — enough to run the Los Angeles Unified School District or the Chicago Public Schools for a year, among many other things.

Shame On You

Who: Larry Davis

Where: New York

What Happened: It’s a mad, mad world. Larry Davis, 22, from Harlem, NY is accused of killing his grandma, stuffing her in a closet and taking a hooker into her bed and has been charged with murdering the transvestite prostitute.

Davis, was indicted in the August slaying of Richard McCoy, described by sources as a cross-dressing escort.

Davis choked the victim during rough sex and wedged the body under a bed, a source said.

The incident bears parallels to the death of Davis’ grandmother Cora Davis, 76, which was ruled a homicide because of blunt trauma to the neck and spinal injuries.

Better Than Fiction

Character: ATF

Plot Line: Federal gun agents in Arizona convinced that “someone was going to die” when their agency allowed weapons sales to suspected Mexican drug traffickers ― made anguished pleas to be permitted to make arrests but were rebuffed, according to a new congressional report on the controversial law enforcement probe.
Agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told congressional investigators that there was “a state of panic” that the guns used in the shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson in January and two U.S. agents in Mexico a month later might have been sold under the U.S. surveillance operation.

Inside the Capitol

Where: Washington D.C.

Who: House Republicans

What Happened: House Republicans are going to save azaleas instead of poor people. While azaleas are being carefully tended to, the bill would cut $832 million from a program that provides food assistance to low-income mothers and children. The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that the reduction could result in as many as 475,000 people being turned away from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) if food prices continue to rise.
