Dear ex-NY Giant David Tyree,

Hot off the heels of your former teammate Michael Strahan’s public service announcement supporting the legalization of gay marriage in NY you made waves with an interview and video in opposition to the proposal. The bill has already passed the U.S. House of Representatives and currently awaits approval by the Senate. In the PSA on behalf of New Yorkers for Marriage Equality, Strahan says “We believe everyone should have the right to get married” and we at GlobalGrind couldn’t agree more. However, not everyone is on board with the proposal, specifically those on the religious right who feel gay marriage goes against Christian values.

You took that viewpoint one giant step further today saying marriage equality will lead to “anarchy.” In your own words:

“What I know will happen if this does come forth is this will be the beginning of our country sliding toward, it is a strong word, but anarchy,” Tyree said in the video. “The moment we have, if you trace back even to other cultures, other countries, that will be the moment where our society in itself loses its grip with what’s right.”

You go on to say:

“It’s not about establishing a theocracy. It’s about what’s right. It’s about how can marriage be marriage for thousands of years and now all of the sudden, because a minority, an influential minority, has a push or an agenda and totally reshapes something that was not founded in our country, not founded by man, it is something that is holy and sacred. I think there is nothing more honorable, worth fighting for, especially if we really care about our future generations.”

While you have every right to disagree with marriage equality for religious reasons, you absolutely crossed the line by saying the fabric of the country will be torn apart by the joining of homosexuals in holy matrimony. As Fred Sainz, spokesperson of Human Rights Campaign, said to ESPN gay marriage has been legal in DC, New Hamshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa and Vermont and in several other countries around the world without the world turning upside down.

“This is what I do know, you can’t teach something that you don’t have. So two men will never be able to show a woman how to be a woman. And that’s just simple. That’s just for a lack of better terms, common sense,” you said.

Common sense would be to do some research before opening your mouth about something you don’t fully understand. You said yourself that two parents are better than one, and gay parents make great parents of well-adjusted, open-minded children with a unique and beautiful view of the world.

You may have helped the Giants win the Super Bowl on a crazy acrobatic catch, but, with all due respect, this issue is something on which you clearly don’t have a good handle. Next time please stop, do some research and think first before talking out your ass.
