From what’s going on in the Capitol to what’s happening oversees, we have it all.

Today we see that News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch may be on his way out, while Michele Bachmann beefs with Black farmers.

What Happened: News Corp. is considering elevating Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey to chief executive officer to succeed Rupert Murdoch, people with knowledge of the situation said.

Better Than Fiction

Character: Rachelle Friedman

Plot Line: A year after she was paralyzed in poolside horseplay at her bachelorette party, Rachelle Friedman knows one thing she would change about her life before the injury.

“I wish we had danced together more because I love dancing so much, and we didn’t do it enough,” she says of her soon-to-be husband. “Looking back, I would have done it every night.”

Friedman will finally make it down the aisle on Friday, marrying the man who has waited to exchange vows with since the accident. She is wearing the same gown she chose for the first ceremony, but with her father pushing her wheelchair down the aisle instead of walking her down it, arm in arm.

Numbers Game

Number: 4,200

Where: Alaska

What Happened: BP has reported yet another pipeline leak at its Alaskan oilfields, just over a year after the Gulf of Mexico disaster. The oil giant said a pipeline at its 30,000-barrel-per-day Lisburne field, which is currently closed for maintenance, ruptured during testing and spilled a mixture of methanol and oily water onto the tundra.

The London-based company has a long history of oil spills at its Alaskan pipelines – accidents which have hurt its public image in the U.S., where around 40 percent of its assets are based.

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation said the spill occurred on Saturday and amounted to 2,100 to 4,200 gallons.

Hero of the Day

Who: Chihuahua

What Happened: Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials Monday released a video of a robbery attempt foiled by an enraged and barking chihuahua, hoping the public can identify the two assailants.

The attempted robbery took place July 7 about 7:30 p.m. at Ace Smoke Shop on North Lake Avenue in Altadena. The video shows two hooded men, one armed with a rifle, running into the store and demanding money.

The store owner quickly begins placing money in a robber’s backpack. As he does, his chihuahua erupts into ferocious barking at the two men, who beat a hasty retreat, running out of the store with the backpack, but taking less money than they could’ve gotten.

The blushing 53-year-old bride was wanted on a three-year-old warrant for identity theft; it is believed she attended the wedding reception after a brief jail stint.

Take it in the Ring

Contenders: Michele Bachmann vs. Black Farmers

Match: Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann pointed to one program in particular Monday when talking about wasteful government spending: a multibillion dollar settlement paid to Black farmers, who claim the federal government discriminated against them for decades in awarding loans and other aid.

Bachmann said, “When money is diverted to inefficient projects, like the Pigford project, where there seems to be proof-positive of fraud, we can’t afford $2 billion in potentially fraudulent claims when that money can be used to benefit the people along the Mississippi River and the Missouri River.”
