30 years ago, video killed the radio star on the cable television channel MTV.

The network set out on a mission to make music a visual experience by creating a place where celebrities can debut their videos and speak their minds for their fans.

Fast forward to now and the Music Television Network has dropped mostly all attempts at playing music videos and has banked on reality shows.

But we here at GlobalGrind would like MTV to bring back 10 shows that we couldn’t live without.

1. YO! MTV Raps

Run DMC shot the pilot episode and history was made from there. Yo! was crucial to the success of hi- hop spreading on a mainstream level. This show was a way for hip-hop to spread its wings beyond New York.

2. 120 Minutes

This show was dedicated to showcasing everything that had to do with alternative music. Here the viewers were able to sit one-on-one with their favorite artist and watch them talk about and perform their music.

3. Remote Control

MTV debuted this show in 1987. This was the first non-musical program that the network premeired, instead it was a game show that delt with pop culture in a comical way.

4. Daria

Daria was an original animated series for MTV. Known for her critical opinions, Daria was created as a spin off from Beavis And Butt-Head (which they are bringing back).

5. Diary

You think you know, but you have no idea. This was part of MTV’s documentary series that followed celebrities around and allowed them to set the record straight for their lives.

6. Singled Out

This was another game show that was hosted by the sexy Jenny McCarthy. Each episode featured 50 guys and 50 women that competed to win a date with the opposite sex.

7. Celebrity Death Match

This was a show with celebrity characters made of claymation. Here was a way for people to see celebrities who have beef with each other or who should have beef, duke it out in the ringer.

8. Making The Video

This was also part of the MTV Doc series that allowed hot artists to showcase the process of making a video for their new hit single. The director of the video gave the run down of what will happen and at the end you were rewarded with the finished product.

9. MTV Cribs

MTV Cribs allowed regular people to step into the lavish homes, cars and gadgets of celebrities.

10. TRL

TRL stands for Total Request Live. This was an original series that had a top 10 countdown of the most popular music videos and interviews with the day’s hottest celebrities.
