Looks like the iPhone will finally find a worthy competitor in the Monthly Smartphone Death Match. The contender?

The Samsung Galaxy II, which will make its debut stateside on August 29, if we are to believe a cryptic invite mailed by Samsung last week.

The Galaxy 11, soon to be renamed by all Network carriers, has dual-core 1.2-GHz processor, a brilliant 800-by-480 Super AMOLED Plus touch screen, 8-megapixel rear-facing and 2-megapixel front-facing cameras, 4G support and is shipped with Android 2.3.3.

That’s saying a lot, because since its debut four years ago, the iPhone has not much in the way of competition.

Google’s attempts to flood the market with Android devices is admirable, but there isn’t a single comparable device that can go toe-to-toe in popularity and performance against the Cupertino giant. Until now.

Last week, Apple went before the International Trade Commission in attempt to ban the Galaxy S 11 around the world because of its similarity in design to the iPhone.

The Galaxy S II will be renamed by carriers to the Galaxy Within on Sprint, the Galaxy Stratosphere on Verizon and the Galaxy Attain on AT&T. It’s Samsung’s fastest selling phone.
