Affion Crockett has gone from that funny guy on Nick Cannon‘s show, to YouTube sensation, to host of his own television show.

It’s been a wild ride and now Affion has some big shoes to fill as the new king of sketch comedy.

His show In the Flow with Affion Crockett is hilarious and with spot on impressions of Jay-Z, Dave Chappelle and our own Russell Simmons, it’s sure to be the next DVD box set you must own.

We sat down with funny man Affion Crockett to discuss his new show, his come up from Wild N Out and much more. Check it out below and be sure to watch In The Flow Sundays at 9:30 p.m. on Fox.

GlobalGrind: Congrats on your new show.

Affion Crockett: I appreciate that.

How is this show different from some of the other sitcoms, sketch comedy work you’ve done, like with Wild N Out?

This is actually where I get the ability to be in character, where in Wild N Out, the whole show is in front of a live audience and it’s just me doing voices, but not actually being in character.

The voices you do are so dead on, man! How do you get the cadence down for your voices?

It’s a strange tactic. I just listen to people, start talking like them and 9 out of 10 times, I nail the voice. But it also helps when it’s somebody that I’m a fan of because I’ve watched and listened to them so many times already without even trying to get them down.

Speaking of fans, there was an incident at the radio station. That was crazy, were you a bit nervous when the whole thing was going down with you and Peter Gunz?

When Pete walked in, he had the two big goons with him. Part of me said, this was a joke because Freeway had just come in and Freeway and me had just talked before I went to the radio station. So I thought they set it up just to make it look good for camera. So when Pete came in, and he starts talking about pistol whipping and all of that, my thing was this, I understand that NY radio stations have had a history of rappers getting shot. I was like, look, that’s not my thing, I don’t want to escalate the situation. If he’s really mad, I’m going to let him say his piece and we’ll see what happens. There was a part of me that was a little hesitant, I wouldn’t say nervous but I was definitely hesitant. Good thing he opened his arms and it was a joke.

Who are some of your favorite characters to do, since you do so many of them well?

Of course the Jay-Z impression is the one that everybody loves most. The Russell Simmons impression definitely. From the new show I have this character called Arrogant Gospel Singer, everybody loves that dude.

The show reminds us of In Living Color and that’s what this generation is missing. Are you ready to be the next voice of comedy?

To some degree, I already am. That’s where I started a lot of the stuff after Wild N Out. But this generation, there’s only a few people that can do impressions of people and capture original characters in his voice. Like I said, I think I already am that, I’m not going to run from it.

After Wild N Out went off the air, you hit the internet super hard. What made you think to go the internet?

Quite frankly, I tried to get my own show after Wild N Out and everybody told me no. Instead of giving up and saying no, I said all right, let’s produce my own sketches online until I get my own show and that’s exactly what happened.

Which one of your online sketches do you think was the biggest one for you?
The biggest one to date is probably the Chris Brown one, “Deuces'”, the parody. It was so big that it actually helped the real song sell. Also, the Run This Town parody, Hunt Chris Brown.

That was one of our favorites.

That was the one that they said, this guy really knows how to produce and play multiple characters in the same scene.

After you did a spoof of Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons Hip-Hop Honors video on YouTube, you got that call from Russell, what was going through your mind?

I was scared. I was afraid that I just pissed off the godfather of hip-hop. Everyone knows Russell to be the zen yoga master, I watch all his reality shows, Run’s House, Running Russell Simmons, and I already know Russell likes to cuss a bit. I was expecting a cussing, but he was a fan and we started working together.

It was really crazy, the morning it came on, we were all watching it in the office and we were wondering, should we send it to Russell? We ended up sending it to him and it was funny as hell.

What’s next on the show, what other skits could we look forward to? I’m pretty sure you’re going to put Chris Brown in there so what other skits could we look forward to in the show?

People have been asking for more Drake so we have a Drake situation coming up this Sunday. This thing I did with Michael Strahan, and Dave Hebner called the fantasy female league, it looks like an ESPN show or a FOX sports show but we are sitting there talking about females instead of athletes. Chris Brown definitely pops up on this episode next Sunday. And then there’s a Kanye parody video that you don’t want to miss.

What other things do you like to do?

I’m still a dancer so we go this spot in L.A. called Groove Night where everyone, all the b-boys, house dancers, etc., we all get together and go in for a little practice session. There were teenage dancers on the show, so they go there too. So that’s one of my favorite past times, to get with my dance community and have fun.
