Apple wants to add facial recognition to future devices, this according to a patent application made public by US Patent & Trademark Office today.

If approved, Apple’s application will allow any Apple device with a front facing camera to compare and contrast the device owners image against pictures associated with owner accounts.

Apple applied for the patent last year.

Android phones already have facial recognition via an application called Face Unlock which was shipped with the Galaxy Nexus back in November. When put to the test however, Mobiledia was able to unlock the phone with a photograph of the phone’s owner. Apple, perhaps seeing a flaw, hopes that owner attentiveness will be a key component of its app, preventing easy access to iPhones and iPads of the future.

In addition to a facial recognition, Apple also applied for a “presence detection” patent  for notebooks, desktops and TVs and a “3D recognition” patent which will allow “future iPads to advance graphics like MRI images for use in hospitals and other enterprise and military applications covering high-end security systems using advanced biometrics.
