According to Detroit News, Ken Daniels was charged in an indictment along with 12 other members of the drug ring, most notably Carlos Powell; a man who authorities believe played a central role.

Federal agents confiscated nearly 30 kilograms of heroin, 12 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana that they believe were purchased in Arizona and in Mexico to be distributed in the Detroit area.

They are also working on confiscated a fleet of luxury items owned by the members that included Mercedes, Ferraris, Range Rovers, Rolls Royces, and boats.

Daniel pleaded not guilty to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and was released on $10,000 bonds. His lawyer Tom Jakuc commented on the situation saying:

“The circumstances as set forth in the indictment can be readily explained… This is truly out of character for a person of his standing and reputation.”

United States Attorney Barbara McQuade released a statement saying:

“We are focused on dismantling major drug trafficking organizations that bring illegal drugs into our community… We want young people to see that the lucrative rewards from drug trafficking are short-lived and lead to criminal charges.”

Daniels represented the people of Detroit in the state’s house from 1999 to 2004. He also served on the Detroit Board of Education from 1999 to 2004.
