As reported by the NY Daily News:

A bus driver in North Carolina is being hailed as a hero after she saved six young students from a potentially deadly blaze.

Lindora Richardson noticed an odor on her bus near the end of her route on Wednesday, the Charlotte Observer reported. When she stopped the vehicle to check it out, smoke immediately began pouring into the front of the bus.

The quick-thinking driver corralled the students to the back and helped them escape through the rear door — seconds before the bus erupted into flames.

“I was just glad I was able to get them off safely,” Richardson told the newspaper. “I think it was a little more exciting for them because it was a fire.”

The children were between 5 and 10 years old.

Officials praised the quick-thinking bus driver for getting everyone out of harm’s way.

“We are very proud of her and for her following proper procedures,” school district spokeswoman Tahira Stalberte told CNN. “It could have taken a very different turn had she not done her job correctly.”

The cause of the blaze is believed to be a problem with the bus’ motor’s fan heater, according to the newspaper.

Richardson will be honored by the Charlotte Fire Department next week, CNN reported.

“I do have two kids, and I do love children, (and) I love my job,” she told the network.

Lindora will be honored next week by the Charlotte Fire Department. What a wonderful rescue, we are happy everyone came out safe!
