27-year-old Dewayne Milton Smith was shot and killed alongside a Mardi Gras parade route in Plaquemine, LA.

Police are looking for Akeem O. Gailes, 25, the man they believe shot and killed Smith during the Mardi Gras parade in Plaquemine on Sunday.

According to the authorities, the shooting occurred at 3:15 p.m. during the Plaquemine Community Parade between W.W. Harleaux and Capt. Talbert Harris streets in the city’s center.

Gunfire erupted after Gailes got out of a four-door white Chevrolet Malibu and began arguing with a group of people on the other side of the street.

Police do not know what the argument was about, but according to eyewitnesses, Gailes punched Smith’s cousin in the face, which prompted Smith to step forward to defend his cousin.

Gailes pulled out a gun, shot Smith in the chest and fled the scene.

Witnesses identified Gailes as the shooter after looking at a photo lineup.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Plaquemine police at (225) 687-9273.
