New York Knicks rising star Jeremy Lin has taken the sports world by storm, his diamond in the rough story has catapulted him to a newfound fame he never thought possible.
But then there’s the flip side of the coin. You become famous overnight, then the back story starts: the Taiwanese-American student from Harvard who can ball and has been sleeping on his teammates’ couch.
The rags-to-soon-to-be riches story of a 6’3” Taiwanese baller who can handle the rock is a rarity.
Lin is seeing it all emerge now: the nicknames, the signs in the stands, the t-shirts, the Asian references and the ugly stereotypes.
Luckily for Lin, he has someone looking out for him. The Asian American Journalists Association has issued a set of guidelines for media outlets that continue to cover the NBA’s newest Asian-American sensation.
Looking out for their boy, the AAJA wants everyone in the media to quit the b.s. when it comes to Lin. No more, “Chink in the Armor” puns, stop all the fortune cookie references and cease with “he can’t drive to the hoop because he’s Asian” jokes.
