UPDATE: 5:30pm EST

Police on Friday identified the gunman who walked into a Pittsburgh psychiatric hospital and started shooting as 30-year-old John Shick.

Pittsburgh police Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki initially told reporters that attempts to name the man, who was not carrying identification, had failed. But later Friday said authorities had determined his identity and were reviewing his personal computer as part of their investigation.

Shick was shot and killed by police Thursday, but not before he killed hospital employee Michael Schaab, 25, and injured seven others.

The gunman who shot 7 people and killed one at the University of Pittsburgh psychiatric clinic yesterday wasn’t carrying any identification and his fingerprints have yielded no clues as to his identity, according to the medical examiners office.

STORY: Oh No! Multiple People Shot At University Of Pittsburgh Psychiatric Hospital

An unknown man armed with two semiautomatic handguns entered the clinic lobby Thursday afternoon and opened fire, killing one person and wounding several others before he was shot dead by campus police.

According to the Associated Press, the gunman’s fingerprints were run through a nationwide database used by police and federal agencies, but to no avail.

Pittsburgh police still have no motive as to why the unknown gunman went on a shooting rampage.

Authorities say the man had two pistols when he shot seven people – one of whom died and whose name has yet to be released.

An eighth person was hurt, but officials say that injury was not gunshot-related.

John Leight Sr., of Shaler Township, confirmed to The Associated Press that his wife, Kathryn Leight, a receptionist at the clinic, was one of the wounded, but otherwise declined comment when reached at home.

“At this point I still don’t know what happened,” he said.

Leight’s son, John Jr., told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the family was told his 64-year-old stepmother had been shot four times and underwent emergency surgery. He said the woman remained in intensive care, but had been taken off a ventilator and was breathing on her own.

The Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic opened Friday with police and extra security checking employee and visitors’ identification.
