According to the NY Daily News, the incident sparked when Nakwon and his family were returning home and were met with a group of movers who had a barrel in front of his door.

Impatient Nakwon grew angry and began smashing his baby’s stroller into the barrel. Afterward, mover Kairon Decaul said Nakwon pulled a gun and started chasing his coworker. The coworker was able to get inside his truck and call 911, telling the dispatcher “He’s got a gun, he’s got a gun!”

Kairon said Nakwon returned to the apartment after chasing his coworker and began to threaten him. All while this was happening, Jessica was screaming at her boyfriend, begging him to calm down.

Nakwon then forced his family into their apartment, eventually allowing his wife and their baby to leave. With the door open, the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit and Nakwon began a standoff in which 4 officers Kenneth Ayala, Matthew Granahan, Al Pizzano, and Keenan were shot.

All of the officers survived their gunshot wounds, leaving a local hospital just hours after being admitted.

Nakwon was hit three times during the gunfight and is currently in critical condition.

Officers say in addition to the 9-mm used during the shootout, Nakwon had an artillery of weapons in his apartment which included a saw-off assault rifle, equipped with a sniper scope, 22-calibar revolver, and 50 rounds of heavy ammunition.

New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg spoke on the incident saying:

“All of these shootings have a disgraceful fact in common. All were committed with illegal guns that came from out of state. You see our police officers putting their lives on the line every single day. Here we were very lucky, but it could have been a great tragedy.”

The NYPD reported that Nakwon’s records indicate that he had just been released from prison two years ago for robbery, attempted murder and selling drugs in prison.

As Bloomberg pointed out, this incident could have ended in a tragedy. We are grateful that no lives were lost.
