The photoshopping of models in magazines is nothing new, but today an 8th grader is skipping school, planning a protest and taking a stand against one of the only teen magazines still in circulation, Seventeen.

14-year-old student Julia Bluhm is the brain behind a new campaign via Change.org, calling for one un-photoshopped spread per month in the teen magazine.

According to reports, Julia started the petition because she wanted to see the girls “like her” represented in the magazine.

“I want to see regular girls that look like me in a magazine that’s supposed to be for me,” she writes in the petition letter. She goes on to explain:

Here’s what lots of girls don’t know. Those “pretty women” that we see in magazines are fake. They’re often photo shopped, airbrushed, edited to look thinner, and to appear like they have perfect skin. A girl you see in a magazine probably looks a lot different in real life.

Julia and fellow petitioners are planning to protest in front of Seventeen’s Hearst headquarters today by taking part in a mock photo shoot celebrating their bodies just the way they are. The 14-year-old isn’t going into this blind though, she has already collected over 13,000 signatures and plans to deliver them to the magazine’s headquarters today.

The protests come following Glamour magazine’s recent decision to stop altering photos of models to make them appear slimmer.

While Seventeen is hardly the publication guilty of the most extreme photo shopping jobs, their social responsibility should be taken more seriously as a publication that targets women in the most delicate demographic. The protests began at 11 A.M. today at the mag’s headquarters, 300 W. 57th St in NYC.
