Joe Walsh, one-term Republican Congressman from Illinois, made a big political no-no when he dissed his Democratic opponent’s time spent in the military, during which she lost both of her legs and received a Purple Heart.

Walsh stated at a town hall meeting on Sunday that Tammy Duckworth uses her time in the military as a political prop. He states:

“Now I’m running against a woman who, my God, military service is all she talks about. Our true heroes, the men and women who serve us, it’s the last thing in the world they talk about.”

His less than favorable comments have angered many, including Duckworth, who has flown Black Hawk helicopters during the Iraq War.

During a 2004 mission, the helicopter Duckworth was co-piloting was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade. Her injury made her the first female double amputee of the war.

Duckworth responded during a Tuesday MSNBC appearance and said:

“He really disrespected 23 million veterans across this nation with those comments, ‘Anyone who has worn the uniform of this great nation for a single day has done more for their nation than Joe Walsh has ever done.”

Walsh has chosen not to retract his statements, but he’s offered an explanation:

“Of course Tammy Duckworth is a ‘hero,’ However, unlike most veterans I have had the honor to meet since my election to Congress, who rarely if ever talk about their service or the combat they’ve seen, that is darn near all of what Tammy Duckworth talks about.”

Veterans groups have demanded an apology from Mr. Joe Walsh, who has never served in the military.
