Whitney Houston has only had 7 acting roles in her life and her last might be her greatest ever. Yes, better than The Bodyguard and better than Waiting To Exhale.

It’s a different look from how we saw Whit in any other movie. She’s older, more mature and she’s been through so much in her life, and watching Sparkle, you can see how she’s gotten better with age.
We should all be thankful that she left us with one last gem. Wesley Morris of the Boston Globe summed it up perfectly when he wrote:
This is the first time her singing feels like an afterthought. With her in this part, as a woman who once lived hard and is trying to prevent her daughters from being chewed up and spit out by the music business, Houston embodies powerful, cautionary wisdom. In her fuller carriage and in the cadences of the rasp her voice had acquired, you can see and hear a life lived. We didn’t need to see her perform in ‘Sparkle.’ She walks and sits in this movie like a woman who’s already sung. Yet once Houston stands at the front of a church and mellifluously wraps that rasp around ‘His Eye Is on the Sparrow,’ the movie is effectively over. The camera frames her looking heavenward and hopping up and down. What we’re seeing is something holy.
Whitney’s spirit is in Heaven, she was an angel on earth, an angel on the screen and she’s touched us all. Her life wasn’t wasted, that we know.
Whitney told us she would always love us, and sang our national anthem better than anyone else. She told us that crack was wack and taught us a thing or two about demons. She told us to love God no matter what life throws at us and before she left, she gave us one last gift called Sparkle.
It’s a gem. Go out and support. RIP Whitney Houston.
