The Chicago school year has already come to a close before it truly got going – at least temporarily. Four hundred thousand (400,000) students are out of school today in the nation’s third-largest school district, due to a widespread teacher strike.

Nearly 30,000 teachers and support staff will not be in schools after their union and school officials failed to reach a contract agreement despite 10 months of negotiations. This is Chicago’s first teacher strike in 25 years.

The strike has prompted the Chicago Police Department to move officers in administrative positions back onto the streets in an effort to beef up patrols.

“The kids in Chicago belong in the classroom,” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel told reporters Sunday night, after the talks failed. “Our kids do not deserve this.”

An agreement was unable to be reached because of compensation, job security, merit pay and an evaluation system.

In a globally conscious America, it would make sense for our teachers to put the interests of the students first when we are ranked low in almost every subject. It always seems that the best interest of children in the United States comes second to the finances of adults. What do you think?
