Earlier this morning, a gunman opened fire on Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, killing 26 people, 18 of whom were children (at time of press) prompting many to see the shooting as a prime opportunity to discuss the government’s state on the country’s gun control.

However, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said “today is not the day,” to engage in a policy debate over gun control when he took the podium at a press release from the White House today.

Carney continued saying:

“I think that day will come, but today’s not that day, especially as we are awaiting more information about the situation. The president as a father and I as a father certainly…feel enormous sympathy for families that are affected. As a father, incidents like these weigh heavily on him.”

Carney added that the administration will “do everything we can to support state and local law enforcement, to support those who are enduring what appears to be a very tragic event.”

The President was briefed on the shooting at 10:30am this morning, and he is expected to make an address on the incident shortly.
