It was once said that “Good Artists Borrow, Great Artists Steal” but at what point does borrowing just become outright stealing?

The new trend seems to be an entire new wave of things that are “inspired” by other (usually higher priced) items, but in some cases it seems like the person who has been inspired is just straight-up stealing.

On one hand you have the 40oz crew who makes the Givenchy and Balmain-inspired snapback hats that seem to truly only be inspired by these brands. The lettering on the Balmain inspired hats are in a similar font that Balmain uses on their tags. The Givenchy inspired cap simply has stars on the hat reminiscent of many Givenchy t-shirts.

On the other hand, you have the Ain’t Shit Funny x MLCS collaborative Hermès “Inspired” Deck & Tees that consists of the actual Hermes logo plastered across the deck and chest of the t-shirts. Conflict of Interest (C.O.I) opts to use a play on words and design of the associated brand’s name. For example – a shirt that is designed like a Givenchy shirt may say Giraunchy across it. Does the overly obvious change in the name brand across the chest count for an original idea? Some may say no, others may disagree, but at the end of the day “Good Artists Borrow, Great Artists Steal.” Right?
