We’re going on the 13-year anniversary of D’Angelo’s classic sophomore album, Voodoo. Unfortunately, the singer hasn’t put out an album since that masterpiece. That looks like it’s going to change in 2013.

Last year, Questlove tweeted that he and the reclusive singer were in the studio working on new music. Now, The Roots’ legendary drummer says that the album is about “99 percent” done.

STORY: D’Angelo To Perform In The US For First Time In A Decade

In a new interview with BillboardQuestlove explained that they are putting the finishing touches on the project:

“All last week, I was in the studio finishing (the album). We spent close to 18 hours, well not me personally because I have to go to ‘Fallon,’ but usually right after work. He’s the only person that I’ll actually go to the studio with and stay there to six in the morning, re-doing these drum parts. I won’t even do that for my own band, but I’ll do it for him. Right now, we’re just tightening up the loose ends. But I still stand by, 99% of it is done.”

Now, the question remains: how good will the album be?

According to Questlove, it’s very good. More than very good, in fact; Quest said the album is an “instant classic:”

There are new albums from Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and D’Angelo coming this year. So we’re gonna say it now: 2013 >> 2012.

In other Questlove news, the drummer just released the lineup for the 6th Annual Roots Picnic Festival. Solange, Trinidad Jame$, Joey Bada$$, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Hit-Boy and more will all be in the spot.
