One of the owners of the Brazilian nightclub, Kiss, has tried to take his own life while in police custody.

After being arrested with three others for connection with the blaze that left 235 people dead, mostly students at a nearby university, Elissandro Spohr was taken to the hospital where he is being treated for smoke inhalation. Spohr, who didn’t start the blaze, but is being held because safety regulations were not up to code inside the venue, is being supervised by a police guard while he undergoes treatment. But on Wednesday, the emotional toll was too much, according to sources.

While taking a shower, Spohr removed the shower hose and tied it to a window, but police discovered him before he placed the other end around his neck, Santa Maria Police Chief Lylian Carus said.

“Everything indicates he was going to commit suicide by hanging,” she said. “He’s emotionally destroyed.”

In addition to Spohr, police arrested another owner of the club, Mauro Hoffman, the vocalist for the band performing that night, Marcelo de Jesus dos Santos, and show producer Luciano Bonilha.
