Edmond A. St. Clair, 21, was stabbed in the heart after a fight with a group of men. The UMES student was a biology major who had dreams of being a doctor and had a passion for producing reggae and rap music.

Police say the incident began when St. Clair was riding in the car with his brother and another man on Saturday evening. They came across a group of several people walking in the street and a fight broke out.

Isaiah St. Clair, Edmond’s brother, said in an interview that he, his brother, and their longtime friend Tre Hardy were driving to pick up Chinese food when three men stood in the road and wouldn’t move. He told police that Edmond St. Clair told him and Hardy to wait in the Honda while he went to talk to the men.

The next thing he realized, his brother was stabbed in the heart. St. Clair said he knelt next to his brother on the sidewalk and held the wound while Hardy ran to flag down a campus police officer.

He said, ‘Someone just stabbed me,'” Isaiah St. Clair. “I was like, ‘Stop playing.’ He was like, ‘Yeah, look.’ He showed me his hand. ‘I got stabbed in my heart.’

“Everything happened so fast,” Isaiah St. Clair said. “By the time we got out of the car, he was already stabbed. I took off my jacket and put it over him and put my hand on his chest until the ambulance came. I was asking, ‘Is anybody going to help?'”

Isaiah St. Clair and Hardy were taken to the police station for questioning, where, he said, they stayed until 8 a.m. Sunday and did not learn until then that Edmond St. Clair had died from his injuries.

Police are now seeking three suspects, though they have no leads. The assailants are identified only as black men in their late teens or early 20s.

Edmond St. Clair was expecting his first child in April, a girl to be named Shiloh St. Clair, with Rhoda Boateng, Boateng and St. Clair’s family said.

Marina Fletcher, St. Clair’s mother, said her son was kind-hearted and ambitious young man, who was “the man of the house” and a father figure to his youngest brother, Kidane Fletcher, 10.

“He gave his younger brother advice; he would call the youngest on the cellphone to help with homework. He looked up to the older one so much, like a father,” she said.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the St. Clair and Boateng families and we hope that justice is served for this tragic and untimely death.
