Can you believe it? Friday is here again and we know that you are just as excited as we are for the weekend. Don’t go running for the door yet though, you still have a full day before it’s officially the weekend – but that doesn’t mean that you can’t do something fun to usher it in. Check out some of the great free activities that we found in Manchester, UK for you in today’s installment of Dollars & Sense.

Visit The Manchester Art Gallery

In the heart of the city centre, this grand pillared building houses a varied selection of art, including Pre-Raphaelite paintings by Ford Madox Brown and paintings of Manchester by Lowry’s teacher, Adolphe Valette. Families will enjoy the interactive gallery and should look out for free resources, such as explorer tool-belts and family backpacks.

Manchester Cathedral

Despite being located just behind one of Manchester’s busiest shopping areas, this cathedral, which dates back to 1215, offers a peaceful retreat from the city’s bustle. The stained glass and intricate carving in the building are impressive, and look out for the Angel Stone – evidence of an early Saxon church in the city that dates back to around 700. Check whether there are any special services on before you plan a visit.
