It’s been a rough week for the Marine Corps.

PHOTOS: PRAYERS! Explosion At Nevada Military Site Kills 6 Marines, Injures 8

A Marine in Northern Virginia shot and killed a male and female colleague at the Marine Corps Base at Quantico and then turned the gun on himself.

Base spokesman Lt. Agustin Solivan initially described the altercation as a standoff between the gunman and fellow colleagues.

After the first shooting, Solivan confirmed that the gunman was isolated in a barracks dorm room at the base’s Officer Candidates School. The base was put on lockdown and residents were warned over a loudspeaker to stay indoors.

“It’s been a long night as we have begun to deal with the tremendous loss that happened last night, and on behalf of the Marine Corps Base Quantico and the Officers Candidates School, I want to express my sincere condolences to the families, the friends, and the Marines- of the three Marines that we lost last night,” said Maxwell. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time. This is truly a tragic loss again for the Marine Corps.”

The names of the victims have not yet been released. Authorities are unsure of the gunman’s motives, but hopeful a thorough investigation will present answers.
