On Thursday, the media portion of Al Qaeda’s offshoot in North Africa became active on Twitter.

“We send glad tidings to our Muslim Ummah in general and its sons from among the supporters of the mujahedeen in particular,” said the Al-Andalus Media Foundation on the site.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, opened it’s original Twitter account on March 16 as @Andalus_Media Twitter.

They then tweeted two messages that were deleted later:

“Will Muslims be silent about what is happening to their brothers in faith in terms of killing, imprisonment and displacement, or will they retaliate?”

“Will the French people succeed in convincing (President Francois) Hollande to preserve the lives of the hostages?”

The group posted three new messages on Thursday, one of which stated Al-Andalus will be opening a new twitter account.

Another, was directed toward the people of France and the family members of hostages. Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb threatened to kill it’s french hostages on March 24. They asked the family members of the hostages to encourage the French government to end it’s military operation against radical Islamists who seized control of part of Mali.

The group, AQIM, currently has five hostages captive.
