Late last week, Rick Warren, one of the country’s most influential pastors, announced that his 27-year-old son Matthew had killed himself. However, things got more shocking yesterday when he announced via Twitter that the gun used in the suicide was unregistered.

“Someone on the Internet sold Matthew an unregistered gun. I pray he seeks God’s forgiveness. I forgive him,” said Warren.

The gun could not be traced, because the serial number was not there.

“We can’t tell if it’s registered or not because the serial number is scratched off,” said an Orange County Sheriff representative.

California law requires background checks and registration for all gun purchasers. Scratching off the serial number on a gun is a federal offense.

Police are still investigating this case. But if this isn’t another example that we need more structure surrounding gun laws, we don’t know what is.

Meanwhile, Pastor Warren is tweeting messages about forgiveness. May his son rest in peace.
