While George Zimmerman’s defense tries to clean up their smear campaign of Trayvon Martin, his parents take the high road, calling for peace and prayers instead of slandering Zimmerman.

On June 1, a crowd of more than 700 people, including public leaders, clergy and residents, attended the “Community Program of Peace, Justice and Prayer” in Miami, Florida.

Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin spoke at the program, asking for prayers from the community and thanking them for their continuous support.

“You don’t understand how this will help us to go on. You don’t realize that your being here has blessed us so,” said Sybrina Fulton, thanking the community for its support. “I stand here as a mother. My heart is hurting, but I know that…God will work this out. I know that Trayvon is looking down on us and he’s smiling,” she said.

“It’s supposed to get easier, the more you do this. The more I do it, the harder it gets,” said Tracy Martin, as he fought back tears. “God gives the tough battles to the toughest soldiers. I’ve been through tough battles, and this is one of the toughest, the toughest.”

Martin continued, speaking on his son Trayvon, who was shot down my Zimmerman just last February.

“We’re going to be the voice for Trayvon,” he continued. “We have to sit through the negativity. We have the prayers of family and friends and we have the prayers of our pastors.”

Benjamin Crump, the family attorney, touched on recent developments in the trial saying:

“We want equal justice for Trayvon Martin just as George Zimmerman’s family would want equal justice. We want the jury to base the verdict on the evidence.” He also spoke on the historic nature of the trial, saying it would set a precedent, regardless of the verdict. “If the killer is exonerated, there’s a precedent that you can kill people in America and no one will be held accountable,” he said. If Zimmerman is convicted, “it will show how far we’ve come since the days of Emmett Till.”

We’ll keep you updated on the latest Zimmerman and Martin developments.
