The World Cup kicks off in South Africa this week, and it’s the first time the country is hosting the soccer festivities. Many people from all over the world will be coming to view the festivities and take part in the major soccer event, but South Africa is quite vast in culture and the land offers much more than some great soccer games. For a glimpse at some great artwork, take a visit to the Goodman Gallery, where engaging, courages, and provocative contemporary art is on full display. It focuses on South African artists and the African continent, and artists whose work engages in a dialogue with the African context.

The Goodman Gallery is gearing up for the FIFA World Cup week as well, as they’ve partnered with various galleries and institutions to present In Context, a series of site-specific exhibitions and interventions in and around Johannesburg over the period of the World Cup. Showcasing emerging and established African artists and major international artists, In Context will include exhibitions, performances, screenings, and installations in public spaces across the city.

If you’re in the city for the soccer activities be sure to check out the Goodman Gallery. For those that can’t make it to South Africa, check out some of the amazing artwork that the Goodman Gallery has to offer
