A WNBA marriage that started on tumultuous footing has come to a resounding end. After just 28 days of marriage, Brittney Griner admitted that her nuptials to Glory Johnson were a “huge mistake” in an ESPN interview. The annulment comes just days after Glory Johnson announced she was pregnant.

The pair was engaged for nine months prior to their May wedding, a time period that included the April arrests of both women in an alleged domestic violence attack on one another.

According to US Weekly:

“Last Wednesday, Glory and I agreed to either legally separate, get divorced, or annul our marriage,” Griner said in a statement. “In the week prior to the wedding, I attempted to postpone the wedding several times until I completed counseling, but I still went through with it. I now realize that was a mistake.”

The Phoenix Mercury player filed for annulment, claiming the marriage was based in “fraud and duress.” After breaking down in tears during the interview, she ended by saying she was going to focus on her basketball career during this hard time.

“With everything going on — counseling, classes — it just wasn’t the right way to start off a marriage,” Griner continued. “I wanted to take time to get myself right and…we both agreed to it this past Wednesday to get a divorce, annulment, and it is in writing in text messages as well,” she added.

The nature of Johnson and Griner’s relationship has obviously changed and now has the added complexity of a baby on the way. We hope everything gets settled in the most peaceful way possible.
