Finally after 6 years of waiting, the world cup begins again! The anticipation in England has been insane, from people driving past with their England flags out their windows to houses being covered in England gear. It’s a shame however that over in America the world cup is not as highly thought of, as soccer isn’t as big out there, but either way i’m sure that there are many who are looking forwards to tonights game.
England vs. U.S.A.
Of course according to the FIFA rankings America doesn’t really stand a chance. England are ranked the 8th best in the world compared to America being ranked 14th. However, I cannot say that we’ve never lost to America. I was watching a world cup programme last night about how America did infact beat England!
It was in the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. At this time England were favourites to win the competition after beating the recent holders Italy a few weeks ago. They declared themselves to be the ‘Kings of Football’ and had in their team one of the best footballers in the world at the time, Stanely Matthews. All the England team were professionals. However, the American team consisted of Teachers, Mail Carriers & Dish washers.
Despite spending the whole game with 90% of the possesion, England conceded in 37th minute and U.S.A went on to win the game which in turn eventually knocked England out the world cup that they thought they should of won.
So to all the American fans watching tonight, nothing is impossible. If a team of dishwashers can beat a team of professionals ANYTHING can happen!
