Christina Aguilera’s VH1 Storytellers aired last night, with the former Mickey Mouse Club member performing six songs, including “Beautiful” and “Fighter”. The pop singer gave her fans an intimate look at the stories behind her songs, and proved that her voice and performance skills are still strong.

Christina’s new album, Bionic, dropped on June 8, and unfortunately, many people are already dubbing it a flop. However Aguilera’s performance on VH1 Storytellers proves that not only is her voice still strong, but she can also work a crowd.

The fact that Christina’s talent is very much in tact, poses a question: Why are so many people saying that she needs to tap out of the pop game? She was a major pop icon at the beginning of the new millennium, during the time when a new, body-glitter-covered pop starlet seemed hit the cover of Tiger Beat every other week.

After her “What a Girl Wants” days, Christina successfully made the transition from cutesy-Disney-approved singer, to sophisticated artist. Although she took a dangerous turn, becoming Xtina and making videos so racy that they had to be censored by MTV (that shower seen in “Dirrty” definitely wasn’t PG), she pulled through. Her second album, Stripped went multi-platinum, and although Back to Basics didn’t sell as well, it still did over a million.

It has been argued that female performers often have a difficult time being successful after they become mothers. As if the fact that they didn’t hit the snooze button on their biological clocks makes them incapable of performing well. Pregnancy may give a woman stretch marks, make her go up a shoe size, or make her reel in her sexiness, but it doesn’t have any effect on the quality of a singer’s voice.
