When I first saw the title for this song, I was immediately excited (pause). As I thought to myself, ‘Could Nicki Minaj have revamped the Master P classic?‘ I quickly rushed to download and press play. Oh, how quickly I found myself to be let down. Nicki Minaj’s ‘Ice Cream Man’ is an entirely different track which is produced by Zaytoven. Instead of the gangsta/grimy Nicki I was expecting, I got a bubblegum pop version of her similar to the way she appears on ‘Your Love’. Not that there is anything wrong with bubblegum pop but with the recent claims of Nicki Minaj being the second greatest rapper of all time, I found myself expecting more from her. In this song, Nicki Minaj takes a symbol of childhood innocence–the ice cream man- and sexes the trivial task of chasing him down and getting the ice cream to an uncomfortable magnitude. With all of the play ‘Your Love’ has been getting seemingly everywhere I go lately, I was just hoping for some of that original gangsta Nicki. Maybe I’ll get that on her next single?
