I am a huge Lupe Fiasco fan; have been for years. I saw the video for ‘Kick, Push’ and thought to myself, ‘This guy is incredible AND he’s representing Chicago? How do I not know this guy?’ So I did a little research on him and stumbled on the Fahrenheit 1/15 series…and wow. Lyrical ability: check. Swagger: check. Reasons for a geek, like me, to be interested (i.e. Koopa and Nintendo references): check plus. Needless to say, I found a new artist to throw in my Zune for years to come. Fast forward to 2010, and it’s been about two and a half years since Lupe released his sophomore album ‘The Cool’ and as a fan, I hate to type that sentence. Two and a half years is too much for me. In that span, he didn’t just stop making music. According to him, his third album ‘L.A.S.E.R.S’ is already done, Atlantic just needs to release it and before this year, he released a killer mixtape, ‘Enemy of the State: A Love Story’ but it was short – it was great, don’t get me wrong, but it was short. Too short, in fact. He canceled a follow-up mixtape to focus on training for a Mount Kilimanjaro climb to fight the global clean water crisis (bravo to him, I won’t hold that against him) his single ‘I’m Beamin’ is good, but it had to grow on me unlike other Lupe tracks, and just recently, he did a freestyle on Rick Ross’ ‘B.M.F.’ so he’s working, but I can safely assume all Fiasco fans (Fiascans?) want, at the very least, another mixtape. Lupe can go bar for bar with any rapper in the game, but I find myself forgetting that from time to time and I hate that. My playlists at home need new Lupe tracks, or a fiasco will ensue. I know he can make great music, I’m just waiting to hear it.
