RnB, Soul, Dance whatever you want to call it. Its all just music to me. Music should always touch the soul and make you dance on the inside at the very least.

It should also change and innovate. Innovation and change come from two separate head spaces.

1. A need to deny conformity
2. The balls to do that

I’ve been very lucky to work with Kanye West on and off since Late Registration and that man has the understanding and need to keep pushing the boundaries with his ideas and sounds. He’s not happy standing still, literally! Sure sometimes he doesn’t get it quite right but its no surprise to me that he so often does and Im sure will continue too. Choosing sounds and beats that don’t conform. Japanese Taiko drums and 808’s on Love Lockdown anyone?

Jay-Z is another artist I’ve had the good fortune to work with and he’s the same but in a different way. He understands that at the heart of what he’s doing whether its on record or live, he has to entertain and give the people what they want to hear.In that respect a good artist should want to break the rules while retaining a basic understanding of what people will be humming as they leave the show.

[pagebreak] We try and do all that and more with Graffiti6. We mix up crunchy beats and 5 part harmonies, Hendrix guitars and Pop melodies. We’ll always start with a good song but we’re not afraid to mash it up. Our songs work on any level whether its our own recordings, pumped up for live, stripped down with acoustics or remixed for the club.Music has always been a means of escape either for the person making it or listening to it so set your ideas free. When your reaching for that idea thats gonna send you into the realms of superstardom then don’t follow the pack, don’t just try and copy what someone else is doing cos I’ll tell you, they’re probably already onto something new.

At the heart if its not moving YOU then chances are everyone else will be out the front door.
