Hip-Hop seems to set a standard on what beauty is for women, and I have wondered why the status quo for men isn’t the same. Recently my little cousin said she had joined the gym, with hopes to loose weight and meet Drake. Her goal-‘A coke bottle’ body. Shocked, I asked her ‘What fuels her desire to be shapely?’

Knowing the answer before she even responded, I drifted into my own thoughts, and wondered why did Fat Joe never want to loose weight for women? What prompts Rick Ross to walk around with his shirt off? As if I had just opened the fire hydrant to my own thoughts, more images of the plump MC’s past and present filled (no pun intended) my head! So for all the women who are battling body issues, and are deeply moved to fit into the female mode of Hip-Hop, let this post serve as a reminder that the only vanity in Hip Hop is the one we create and tolerate.
