I like the rest of the world was caught completely off guard when nine year old Willow Smith turned the world upside down as she unleashed her debut single, ‘Whip My Hair’ last week.  Willow Smith is the newest child star from the infamous Smith Family, daughter to Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith. With-in days of releasing her debut song, literally millions of people listened to the song and thus the next Internet frenzy began.   While many of us were caught up in the excitement and surprise of how this 9 year old could drop such a monstrous track, the haters started spreading their negativity.
Honestly I can’t say that I am at all surprised because it has been smoldering since late last year. Since December 2009, Willow Smith has been the subject of controversy with her very edgy half shaved head hair cut when she sang on stage with family Will Smith, Jada, and brother Jaden at President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.  With the release of her hot single ‘Whip My Hair’, unusual and unfair criticism has escalated.  So with that said, I want to address some of the negative comments floating around.

The first common thought seems to be: Willow Smith is too grown; Will and Jada need to get their daughter in check.

Huh? Wait! What does “too grown” really mean?  Is she inappropriately dressed? Are the lyrics of her song negative and distasteful? Has she behaved in a disrespectful manner publicly where the paparazzi may have missed a shot or two?  Too Grown to me means a little girl who is involved in adult conversations, carries herself very sassy, talks back to her parents, and displays mannerisms that are beyond her years, well I think you get the point.   We have all seen it and thought who isn’t raising this child or where are her parents?  But what we haven’t seen is how Willow interacts with her parents in a private setting, nor have we ever seen Willow in public without either of her parents close by.  Finally we haven’t had the opportunity to sit down with her ourselves. So do we really know what she is like?  Are we really in a position to form an opinion? Or has the disease of nasty untruthful gossip slipped in our mindset? Just asking.
A second statement that has been voiced is as a little Black girl and with all of her parent’s resources and money, why would they allow her to into the entertainment business? Education should be her priority.
Speaking of education, have you done your homework? Probably not. Just making negative assumptions without research. Jada enjoys engaging in politics with her husband Will and her top priority is that the education system in the US is reformed. Jada Pinkett Smith has added another title to her resume: Schoolmaster just so you know. Jada and Will Smith opened the New Village Leadership Academy last fall. This private school, for pre-kindergarten through sixth grade, has 60 students, according to their web site.

Jada Pinkett Smith hopes to open a companion campus for upper grades. Her plan is to eventually have a high school. She decided to open the elementary school after creating a comprehensive home-school program for her children, Jaden and  Willow.

Jada Pinkett Smith said the school stresses ‘100 percent mastery,’ encouraging students to retake exams until they score 100 percent.  In addition, the student body is ethnically and economically diverse.  According to sources, she called the school project ‘serious business and is pro
