Wes Leonard, 16, of Fennville High School had an undefeated season with his basketball team. Yesterday, Wes’ incredible season and beautiful life took a heartbreaking turn when Wes, after making the game winning shot, collapsed on the court and later died.
Wes Leonard, 16, of Fennville High School had an undefeated season with his basketball team. Yesterday, Wes’ incredible season and beautiful life took a heartbreaking turn when Wes, after making the game winning shot, collapsed on the court and later died.
Wes went into cardiac arrest after the game and became unresponsive in front of hundreds of spectators. Wes was rushed to the hospital around 9:15 p.m. and was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m.
Deb Patterson, a spokeswoman of Holland Hospital, said a cause of death had not been determined. Leonard, who scored more than 1,000 career points, had just scored the winning layup in a 57-55 win over Bridgman to round out Fenville’s 20-0 season.
After the game, friends and family took to Leonard’s Facebook wall to offer prayers and support. Leonard’s skills were exceptional, but like so many high school kids he loved music, sports and hanging out with his friends. On his Facebook page, Wes had his own hip-hop quote-ables.
